Alanya - Useful information for visiting

  3 votes
Blue sky, turquoise water, beautiful hotels gleaming in the sun… are you ready for Alanya? It’s little wonder that Alanya is one of the most popular resorts in Turkey, with its moderate climate and many attractions.

Alanya Port
Alanya Port
The region of Southern Turkey known as Alanya features a peninsular seashore town with pedestrian flights up to the heights of a genuine Ottomanesque Castle. Alanya Castle is the upper house, with its rocky citadel and outer castle wall design, meeting the Kizil Kul (Red Tower) lower building by the shore. The crenellated Red Tower is an octagonal thirteenth century red brick building flying the Turkish flag sited on the Tersane (shipyard). The vaulted dry dock design required guarding of valuable ships and cargo goods.

Coastal Alanya is picturesque, recalling Scottish and Chinese wall and tower gate constructions. The crimson brick structure overlooks the harbor waterway. But the mellow blue seawater and the warm air climate in Alanya functions to attract most of Turkey’s traveling customers. As a former Turkish naval residence and strategic seaport, today’s Alanya bristles with informal commerce. Modern fish cafes today jostle with ancient cisterns and Byzantine churches.

The Alanya harbor port, picturesque buildings, and informal flavor of the Anatolian coastal area furnish relaxation and novelty for global travelers, business conferences, and residential inhabitants and guests. There is a California/Italian feel to the waterside city. Alanya is the jewel of the Anatolian Coast. International Folklore Festival occurs in summertime. Damlata Beach, the Dripping Caves, and Cleopatra beach make day excursions from the nearby city of Antalya.

The nearest airport to Alanya was planned to open in late 2008, and is now postponed until the end of 2009. Antalya Gazipasa has been long awaited by international travelers anxious to enjoy convenient access to coastal Turkish resorts and cities. Foreign ownership of local properties has significantly increased.

What's really great:
Alanya Castle View
Alanya Castle View
A road winding its way through the Old Town of Alanya climbs the citadel hill (250m/820ft) to the courtyard of the upper fortress, at the north end of which stands the castle mosque (Kale Camii). In the same courtyard are a ruined cruciform Byzantine church and, at the southern end, a lighthouse erected in 1720. Adjoining the west wall is the citadel proper, in a good state of repair. It affords SUPERB PANORAMIC VIEWS over the Mediterranean coastal plain, taking in the scattered houses of Alanya, the fruit orchards and the Ak Dagi Massif.

Sights:
You’ll love waking up in the morning and gazing out over the glittering waters of the harbor. If you rise early enough you can enjoy a rainbow over the waters, compliments of the light fog from nearby Taurus Mountain. The sparkling sands of the beaches are waiting for you! You’ll have a whole day of sunshine and indeed, the slogan of the Bureau of Tourism for Alanya is “where the sun smiles”. Windsurfing, parasailing, banana boating, and other water sports can fill your day or you can wander through the magnificent museum and other beautiful attractions.

Oscar’s Scandinavian Restaurant
This is a favorite place for Scandinavian visitors but everyone agrees it’s a great place to dine. About 75 international dishes are served here including Turkish, Scandinavian and Mexican. Very child friendly, there is a hedge garden and a games room to entertain the young ones as well as half price menus for them.

Red Tower Brewery
If you want something unique, you’ll want to visit Red Tower Brewery! Spread over six floors and a garden there is a bar on the first floor, an international kitchen on the second and the Kale Yolu Turkish Restaurant on the third. You’ll enjoy the Sky Lounge Bar on the sixth floor and especially the home made beer.

Crazy Horse
Crazy Horse is a perfect place to relax or to begin an evening out on the town. You can order delicious Latin food as you sit in the garden or just stop for a drink in the Lounge. Further into the evening a DJ provides entertainment.
