Savonlinna is situated in Finland's wonderful Lake District. It covers a number of separate islands, even though they are linked by bridges. Thus there are miles of waterfront in what is not a very large town.
The most scenic place is Ovanlinna Castle, looking like something out of a fairy tale, where Ballet and Opera Festivals are held [don't expect cheap prices.]
Near this is the very good Provincial Museum with three museum ships anchored outside and open to view and only just further is an information centre about life and wildlife in the Lakes area.
It is well worth while going for a look at the smaller 'Back' islands, one of which has the town's casino and another is practically without buildings. [edit text][editors]
