Poor in money, rich in spirit

  9 votes

The poorest country in this hemisphere, it is definitely all that it may seem to be. Very poor with hardly any resources to offer. The disparity of wealth are insane-- the poor are extremely poor and the rich are extremely rich.

Favourite spots:
Port-Au-Prince doesn't have much, besides the market. Be VERY careful in the marketplace! Lots of pick-pockets and fighting over who will sell you something. The fort in Cap Haiten (sp?)....built by the Haitians to defend Haiti from the French colonialists. Not far from Port-Au-Prince, but a long journey b/c of the road system (or lack of).

What's really great:
The landscape and the people, if you take the time to know them.

Sights:
The Market Place in the center of town, if you can get in to it, Cite Solei is eye-opening, but it's run by a pack of bandits, so it's best if you go in with someone that's from there.

Other recommendations:
Listen around for where the music is and follow it...you won't be let down. Also, during the Rah-Rah season (around Easter), you will see lots of small parades of people in the streets in the interior
