Arles is a major city in Provence and provides easy access to the Camargue. It has numerous Roman remains, having World Heritage status, and its Roman Amphitheatre or Arena is still used for bull fights and other events. The necropolis area of the Alyscamps makes for a delightful stroll.
The Cathedral is the most dramatic of the city's medieval buildings and the cloisters would be a bad sight to miss.
There is no shortage of reasonably priced hotels, more than one being in hwat were orinally rich villas when the city's position on the Rhone made it the second port in Provence and the first, when marseilles was being blockaded in times of war.
As you might expect, many of the city's sights will appear familiar if you are a keen Van Gogh afficionado. [edit text][editors]
