Travel guide to Tende
Lac Vert de Fontanalba
Lac Vert de Fontanalba
Tende was a fortified town guarding an important pass into the Piemont. Buildings are typically medieval houses and alpine architecture, with narrow streets, vaulted passages and sculpted door lintels. The houses are roofed in lauze, a local varient of slate.
The tall "needle" ruin is all that's left of the 14th-century chateau, destroyed in 1692.
Tende, St. Dalmas and Casterino are centers for excursions into the Vallée des Merveilles.
The high valleys surrounding Mont Bego is an area well-known for its wealth of rock petroglyphs. Hike into the Fontanalba valley whose upper reaches boast broad expanses of glacially-polished rock, alpine tarns, wet meadows, groves of feathery-needled larch trees and clumps of alpenrose . The view of Mont Bego from the hillsides just above the Lacs Jumeaux is picture-postcard perfect and the long-horned mountain sheep called ibex are frequently seen in this area.
