If you don't like seeing lots of people Chamonix may not be for you; there's no quiet season. However, if you don't go, you will be missing your chance to see some of the best mountain views in Europe.
This is a place with quite a choice of mechanical routes into the high Alps. One is the téléferique in two stages to Aiguille de Midi and then by a slow and incredibly beautiful chairlift to Pont Helbrunner in Italy. If you like circuits, you can descend on the italian side and get a bus back through the Mont Blanc Tunnel.
Another option is to go to montevers and the Mer de Glace [murder glass as its been known to countless English speakers.]
For these attractions you are best advised to stay in or near Chamonix and to start out early in the day.
For details on the mechanical aids click on http://www.chamonix.com/accueil.php?ling=En and then on 'Mountains.'
This will give you a mountain plan and above it a considerable list of options for getting high without too much effort. [edit text][editors]
