Chichen Itza - Mexico, Yucatán Chichen Itza is the most extensively excavated and the most famous of all the great Mayan cities. Chichen Itza means “On the Edge of the well of the Itza”. Itza is the name of the tribe that settled here. It was founded in the 5th century but the city’s peak was reached in 950 AD.
