Lynch Castle - Travel tip by marianne

pictureMember opinion: Lynch Castle is at the corner of Upper Abbeygate Street and Shop Street (Galway's main pedestrianised shopping street). It is strange to see a castle in between houses. The castle dates back to the 16th century but has been the A.I.E bank since 1966. The castle was home to the Lynch family, an important family who supplied the city with more than 80 mayors between the 15th and 17th centuries

The exterior looks very sturdy. Gargoyles and the arms of Henry VII are details to look out for. The doors are not original but date back to 1930s. Inside is a series of panels telling the story of the castle.
