Thailand State Railroad: http://www.railway.co.th/english/index.asp

For the cost of $24 USD, we took a night train for the distance between Chiang Mai and Bangkok and found it to be our best night train experience EVER! The seats are in pairs facing each other with lots of leg room, a table can be dropped on to a clamp on the side, a ladder/rack sits along side each pair of seats, and the sleeper beds are actually comfortable and roomy! A porter comes around at 8:30 to convert the beds and hang drapes for privacy. We ate dinner off a menu that is brought around early in the evening and for $6 USD, had a beautiful four course meal complete with bananas for dessert. I should note that we took a 2nd class, air conditioned car. The total trip time was 14 hours.

The route between Bangkok and Chiang Mai actually could have been used to visit most of the sites we took in: Autthaya, Kamphet, Sukhothai, Lampang and Lamphun. Had we realized how nice the train service was, we would have considered using the train the full way through![edited by eirekay at 2009-05-15 02:28]
