Companies will make you suffer for your age or for any pre-existing medical so, if both apply, don’t expect anything cheap. However, the extent of your financial suffering and, indeed, whether you can obtain cover at all, can vary enormously between companies – and with the same company at different times.. For instance, both my wife and I have previously had cover refused by a company that at this moment will cover us more cheaply than any other – presumably because of the timing of medical occurrences. It is also true that the responses for a week in Madeira now vary from refusal of cover through £365 down to £190!!

I suggest you put ‘travel insurance senior medical’ and the name of your country into a search engine and contact as many as your nerves will stand. Make sure you tell them about every condition you have or they can refuse to meet a claim, even if it is unconnected with your pre-existing condition. Note also that any excess may be higher if you are over 65, even if the event causing the claim is totally unconnected with your age – a friend had a claim turned down when his travel companion [aged 48] was unable to travel. Therefore give serious consideration to purchasing a waiver exemption.

David this is a very important topic for all.

At http://www.ukv.de I read this insurance costs German seniors 60+ €28,00 per year for the first 45 days of travel and thereafter €9,00 per day. I am sure the rest of the EU has similar deals? Try these sites:

www.fairinvestment.co.uk/travel_insurance_for_pensioners.aspx

www.silverhairs.co.uk/help29.htm

www.insurefor.com/b2c/instant_quote_step1.aspx?agent=501

At the moment I (47y) have regular German ("AOK") health insurance. For world-wide travel from Germany one needs only an extra "Auslandskrankenschein" which costs currently €9,50 per year and covers immediate and only necessary emergency medical costs for upto 45 days of travel. A friend of mine(55y) needed and used this service recently, was hospitalised in Manila after an infection for 3 weeks until he could fly again. All costs totalling €10000 were paid, including a new return flight ticket with 3 seats, even his own sexy flight nurse/attendant!

RR

Trivia: Germany has a special deal with Spain as to health insurance called “Iberica Salud” which encourages the retired to live there, the climate is far healthier and the medical costs far lower, insurance companies save millions per year :-)

In Canada unless you were in a Union you pay double and some times triple the amount if you are over 65...and they will only cover you for 3 weeks.

I have just recently found what I think is a very good firm for UK seniors up to age 74 with a pre-existing condition. Although I have no shares I'm not into company ads but I am prepared to give details to anybody who contacts me personally.
