Does anyone have any idea which vaccines I need for Peru? I will be going to Lima, Cusco, hiking the Inca Trail, and the Manu Reserve.

Thanks

Hi Dani,

I would still consult a recommended travel doctor but when we went in 2002 we had to have Yellow Fever - if you can't produce evidence of this nasty one you will be jabbed on the spot at Puerto Maldonado Airport.

You also are recommended to have Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B ( Hep B is a course of 3 shots). We had already had Typhoid and Tetanus so you may need these as well. Plus we also had to take Malaria tablets and there are 2 different types of tablets for 2 different malarias so you need to check which one, this needs to be commenced 1-2 weeks prior.

Since you have to go to the doctor I can't stress enough to ask for a script for Diamox, these little tablets do wonders to help you acclimatise super quick to the high altitude, coca leaves just don't measure up the same. They only need to be taken about 2 days before flying to the Andes.

Sorry to sound like you are going to be a pincushion.

Good Luck

Cheers,

Kerrie

Hope you're not going too soon danibear or you're gonna feel real spaced from all those chemicals. Try having Typhoid, tetenus and polio on the same day... what a buzz that was!

Would you risk it, for a biscuit?

A lot of us travel on risk but as Kerrie points out: your doctor and/or local clinic will know better and always give up-to-date info for ALWAYS for ALL DESTINATIONS. Do not forget the effective time windows of some vaccines need (some one month), so consult at least 6-weeks before travelling and prepare for costs too - in Germany one pays about 100 Euro for all current recommended inocculations! RR

(Not for only Peru, a silly thread, there should be a general topic on this!)
