Berlin travel tips

Haus Midgard
Nice little house for 2 - 4 persons in a wonderful big garden. You can easily reach the tram, time to go into the city by tram and s-bahn: about 30 minutes. There is a bathroom, a kitchen, a bedroom, a living-room with a sofa for 2 persons and a terrace. Two bikes are available. more

Hong Kong Express
Great original Cantonese food and oriental fruit cocktails. I recommend crunchy chicken with red curry sauce. more

Pagode Thai Restaurant
One of the ladies, eating soup no.5 said that the soup was fantastic. She mentioned that all the dishes based on coconut milk tasted similar, but all were incredibly good. Their curries are probably not very hot (not as hot as in Thailand, which is probably the consideration for the local, more sensitive testebuds) but there are ways to spice things up with hot sauces and chillies. The menu is long enough and the prices are superb. Their lemongrass drink is a bliss! more

Charlotte Cafe
One of the best value places in Berlin. Perfect place for breakfast, they have a sweet French breakfast (sorry no brioche), hearty Bavarian breakfest and a few others, the deals usually come with a choice of hot drink (any type of coffee, including cappuccino) and always comes with a glass of water. To put things in perspective: Bavarian breakfast, French breakfast, three cappuccinos and a large bottle of mineral sparkling water was €12.70. more

Matzbach
A fantastic restaurant and bar, belonging to a hotel of the same name at the end of Bergmannstrasse at the other end of the Marheineke Halle, with pavement tables overlooking a great fountain being a collection of giant jugs pouring water onto a shallow pool. Often jazz artists play live there. The service is professional and the menu is comprehensive. more

Turandot
This is a delightful little drink bar or a pub serving unsophisticated food from a long menu. Their hefeweizen beer from tap is unheard of, but it is drinkable, very drinkable, actually. The interior has a decadent decor and atmosphere and the tables outside are simple and unpretentious. more

Bergmann 103
A nice little cafe/restaurant along the busy Bergmannstrasse - busy with little cafes and restaurants. Their menu specialises in various national breakfasts, and it states that eating from mum's and dad's plate was free. :) Their Shoefferhoffer Hefe beer from tap is called and great. more

Oststrand by Eastside Gallery
A great beach bar at the River Spree near the Ostbanhof and the new O2 Arena. It used to be a club and a concert venue but it does not seem anymore. The beach is large, the venue has many deckchairs, benches, beach booths, and even sitting directly on the river. The bar is efficient and their measures are generous. Their pizza bar is fantastic. more

Q-Dorf
This is a large club attracting a mix of local and foreign crowd. It has about eight bars and several places to boogie, as well as an arena where concerts can take place or an artistic programme. The door policy is relaxed and everyone is searched upon entry for weapons, etc. No fuss, though. It is open late (I mean until wee hours of the morning) and the atmosphere is friendly. Very close to Ku'damm, which in the past did not have the best reputation for working girls and safety. But I think this now under control. more

Fritz Club am Postbanhof
This is a large venue catering for twentysomethings. It has a few dancefloors and an open-air garden serving probably the best hotdogs in Berlin. It is safe and its door policy is relaxed. The cover charge varies depending on the the time of arrival. Before 11pm, it is usually about €3, then it doubles. more

Alte Nationalgalerie
What I liked most were impressionist pieces of art, esp. by Paul Cézanne. There are also paintings by Renoir or Manet and sculptures (among others The Thinker by Auguste Rodin). If you plan to visit more museums buy a pass valid for ca. 30 venues, which costs only double the single ticket. more

Gemäldegalerie
The museum houses pieces of art beginning from Middle Ages to 18th century including such famous artists as Rembrandt, Albrecht Dürer or Vermeer. If you plan to visit more museums buy a pass valid for ca. 30 venues, which costs only double the single ticket. more

maoa
maoa stands for modern art of asia. The restaurant serves asian food that is served in an open kitchen. We opted for one serving - you go to a servery and choose what you want and which sauce you would like it cooked in and pass it to the chef. It is then cooked and brought to your table. For a few more euros you can opt to go back for unlimited servings - so go hungry! We booked a table but arrived earlier - the staff were helpful and accommodating. Nearest station is Potsdamer Platz. Mon-Sat 17.00-01.00; Sun ans holidays 11.30-01.00; Sun brunch & lunch 11.30-15.00 more

Liebermann - Villa Am Wannsee
We decided to visit the Max Liebermann Villa whilst in Wannsee. You can walk around the garden and inside the house is an exhibition of his work. There is a small cafe and terrace on the ground floor as well as a shop. Entry was 4euros. Closed on Tuesdays. April-Sept 10.00-18.00 (Thurs 20.00) Oct-March 11.00-17.00 more

Cafe im Koernerpark
A wonderful place for Sunday in the summer. The adjacent art gallery puts up a live music show of rather decent quality - free. Their service is rather patchy and amateurish but their very typical German grill and cold Erdinger Hefe make up for it. more

clubhouse berlin
lively hostel in the former east berlin near the Friedrichstraße s-bahn train line. 3 minutes from main train station, shops, bars and restaurants, and a man made beach bar down by the river spree. this great little hostel offers you bed & all you can eat breakfast for as little as a £10 per night, typically shared facilities, free wireless internet, pool table & 24 hr bar. friendly english speaking staff and a great atmosphere. mixed and same sex dorms - check with reception. you can also book various tours with the front desk. one tour i really recommend is the berlin city walking tour, it covers many ww2 places of interest and other historical sights, price then was just 10 euros; includes lunch, s-bahn train ticket and the walking tour starting 10 am til 5 pm, also a included a visit to a chocolate shop with a difference. the tour is factual, interesting, sometimes harrowing, eye opening true stories that happened during the war , but a memorable and great tour. more

Casa Hotel
I stayed at Casa Hotel in February 06 and had a great time there. The room was very quiet and clean, modern and new infrastructure and friendly staff. Breakfast is huge and at a high quality standard. I paid 110 Euro per Room and Night for a Superior Room including Breakfast, which seamed quite reasonable to me. The location is off Ku-damm, S-Bahn Stop Savignyplace is some 5 Minutes on foot, the Gedächtniskirche 15 Minutes. more
