Braunschweig (old: Brunswiek) is one of the smaller "big towns" in Germany, with approximately 250,000 people. It is known for its Technical University founded in 1745. Today its self-titled name is the Town of Science. The city is famous for Henry the Lion, who founded Munich.
Some historical buildings survived the bomb night of Oct. 14th, 1944, when thousands of people died because fire bombs took away the oxygen by burning all the old wooden frame work houses. Today there are many efforts to rebuild the city, including the restoration of the old mid-town castle, which will contain a shopping mall when finished.
In the old quarter of th town, Magniviertel, there is the first Rizzi House in Germany. All churches of the original five quarters of the town are worth a visit. The old dome and the castle of Henry the Lion form a nice place surrounded by rebuilt frame work houses. [edit text][editors]
