Travel guide to Hameln
Hameln is very well known to those in English speaking countries because of Robert Browning's poem, 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin,' this being an anglicisation of the name. The piper cleared the town of a plague of rats but, when the mayor went back on his promise to pay 1000 guilders, he played his pipe again to a different tune and cleared the town of children.
Hameln itself is a very pleasing north German town.Any English visitor going there as their first German town should note that the word rathaus has no connection with the rats of the poem! It simply means 'town hall' - and a striking building it is. [edit text]  [editors]
