Travel guide to Shama

Fort Sao Sebastian, Shama

The village of Shama, which boasts a mighty Sao Sebastian fort, is not particularly striking, contrasting the other villages and towns along the coast. The fort, which houses main post office, is also used a museum. It is small but has an interesting construction and illustrates how the Portuguese slave traders lived in Ghana. There is a good view from the top of the stronghold. The village itself looks like one of many. The beach is not particularly great and the population not specially friendly. This is probably the reason why Shama is almost never on tourist itineraries and few guides know about the place. The village, a few kilometres from the main highway, is badly signposted, too.
