I had the severe pleasure of getting to spend 3 months in not-horrible Doha, Qatar. As far as Middle Eastern countries go, it is actually rather pleasant.
Favourite spots:
I did not get to do much, but the Marriot hotel is very nice. The only problem I had, was, well, I work at night, and during the day I sleep. I put a do not disturb sign on the door, and every day at about 5:00pm, I get a telephone call from the front desk asking me when they could clean the room. This got old fast. I had to repeatedly explain to them that I worked nights.
What's really great:
I think the most special thing is not feeling like everyone hates you. As an American in Saudi Arabia, you get the feeling that the Saudi's would like to kill you. In Doha, the Qatari's really don't seem to care one way or another.
