Member opinion: One pleasant excursion that I made while waiting in Dakar for my ship to Cabo Verde, was to the neighbour island of Gorée.
I took a boat to arrive there, where spent the full day walking around its narrow streets and lanes, and visiting the horrible slaves’ warehouses, where the execrable traders of slaves piled up the African people before embarking them to America to be sold. Really, it is a very didactic visit which will help you to understand better the African continent and its inhabitants.
The island can be toured on foot. In a hill there lives a commune of philosophers, a sort of Rastafarians. There is a museum of history, a fortress, a church, a mosque and the infamous House of Slaves.
Up to the north in direction to Mauritania it is worth to stop in Saint-Louis, another pleasant island (in fact is a double island) where worked the famous French Traveller René Caillié. It is the oldest French settlement in Africa and it was another slave’s warehouse.
