Even though most young people, at least those from Europe, regard Venice as a spot for elderly art fanatics, where the only thing you can do is to spend loads of money for little service, there is another side to this beautiful city. In the side street, heading to narrow channels, the observing visitor finds plenty of small bars, pubs and wine shops, the so-called baccari. Guest in these etablissements in less frequented streets and squares (campielli) are fishermen, gondolieri, harbour workers etc. local people, as it were, speaking their local dialect. One ombra of wine (0,1 l) costs between 60 cents and €1,50, so a tour of 20 baccari isn't too expensive but gives you a different impression of Venice, the serenissima!

The friendliness and originality of the Venetians, once you begin speaking Italian, and the pretty girls working on the ferryboats (traghetti)

San Marco Square at Carnival (Tuesday), Punto della Dogana, Università di Ca' Foscari.

Youth Hostel Venezia, at the other side of Canale della Guidecca

all the small baccari, bars and wine shops, in the side streets and small squares, avoid British/Irish/American style pubs in general, those are spots only for tourists, prices are scandalous!!!!
