Chichicastenango is an important market town of Guatemala. It is a lovely colonial town with two grand churches right on the main square, where the market takes place. Chichi boasts fine examples of colonial mansions and grand houses. Some of them house fine restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels. The city is also known for its peculiar Indian culture, and the woods surrounding the city hide strange places of worship, yet they seem more of a tourist trap than a real thing. Apart from the very animated market, Chichi has also great festivals dedicated to the patrons of the churches, which often ends with basic (and a little scary) fireworks and petards. Overall, Chichicastenango is a great place to relax. It is located in the lush mountains and feels a little in the middle of nowhere. The roads leading to Chichi are narrow and winding.
