Lago de Atitlan must be Guatemala's most dramatically located Lake. Three mighty volcanoes stand by the lake and at sunset the scene looks as if it was taken from a science-fiction film. It looks truly off this world. Lago de Atitlan is probably one of the world's most beautifully situated lakes with the mountains and little villages and colonial towns. Some of the best views of the lake are from the very touristy town of Panajachel. The three volcanoes are San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlan. In 1976, an earthquake killing 26,000 people fractured the lake bed and the water level dropped dramatically. The lake remain navigable and it seems that the wealthy Guatemalans love to have their houses around. [edit text][editors]
