About as laid back as it gets, Panajachel offers a hip place to simply chill. Perched on the shores of Lago de Atitlan, stunning views of the lake and its three volcanoes, San Pedro, Toliman and San Juan, can be seen from almost anywhere in the town. Go down to the dock and negotiate a private boat taxi to take you to any one, or two, or three or four of the many villages that dot the shore of this large lake, or spend the day just floating amidst the beauty. Sunset on the lake harvests a cornucopia of colors as smoke from the volcanoes mixes with low clouds.
The town itself consists mostly of souvenir shops and tourist fare. Hotel offerings range from low key hostels to high end spas and private homes are available for rent on the outskirts of town. Restaurants range from Indian and French to traditional Guatemalan, with truly something for everyone. [edit text][editors]
