information about germany  TrierGermany, Rheinland-Pfalz
The Porta Nigra was built circa 200 A.D. as one of 4 city gates. During the Dark Ages, the locals began to dismantle the gates and use their metals & stones for other purposes.
Around 1028, the Greek monk Simeon lived as a hermit in the ruins of the Porta Nigra. After his death in 1035 and sanctification, the monastery Simeonstift was built next to the Porta Nigra to honor him. Saving it from further destruction, the Porta Nigra was transformed into a church.
