The granite cliffs were thrown up by the tectonic pushing together of some mini-continents about four hundred million years ago.The lake was deepened by the quaternary ice deposits which finally melted about twelve thousand years ago. The land on the lake shore is owned by a member of the famous Guinness brewing family.
