The caves of Ajanta are famed for their marvelous murals depicting the life of Buddha. 29 caves are carved into the walls of a horse shoe shaped river canyon. The earliest dating back to 2nd century BC, and added to in the 6th and 7th centuries AD, the caves vary between monastery and temple, representing lesser and greater vehicle Buddist periods. Ajanta served as a training ground for monks; Dinnaga, a well known Buddist Philosopher taught here. The frescoes in caves 1 and 2 tell the story of Bodhisattva, Buddhas former existence before enlightenment. Later caves tell sotries of Buddha's later lives and teachings. Cave 19, the Carpenter's Cave has the most elaborate facade and porch, it's interior featuring a beautifully carved dome ceiling. Cave 26 has the truly incredible Buddha in Nirvana, a 15 foot long figure of Buddha on his side, settling into sleep upon his death; its walls lined with carvings of the various lives of Buddha.
