Calangute is Goa's number one package tour destination in north Goa.
The seashore is one string of beachfront shacks serving delicious Indian meals. Vendors from Kashmir and Rajastan peddle sarongs, carved wooden elephants and other trinkets to sun-loving tourists.
Calangute was once the preferred hang-out of the hippie crowd, but these days it is more like a small-scale resort than an idyllic fishing village.
Accommodation can be difficult to arrange on spec, especially in the high season (December and January) as most hotels have contracts with tour operators. Smaller guesthouses tend to be booked up before the season starts. If you arrive early in the morning you will stand a better chance of finding a room.
Best time to visit: from November to May, unless you like to be soaked by the monsoon rains. [edit text][editors]
