The Indian Union represents itself as a Third World country but develops step by step into a modern democratic state, not losing its foundation of Hinduism resp. Islam. Poverty is incredible, people are fighting for their life with dignity and energy. This is obvious when you drive through the city and see people living in shantytowns or on the streets. Traffic is horrendous, including not only trains, busses, cars and trucks, but horses and camels as well. Old and New Delhi are separate entities, each with its own administration and economy. New Delhi is the political centre and Old Delhi is where work and trade are done in small businesses under conditions which are mostly unfit for human beings, but some is done in modern firms or factories. With its hinterland it is also the most important industrial location of the country. The history of the country and the city of Delhi is evident, when the visitor is able to read the buildings – mosques, tombs and gardens, shrines and temples. [edit text][editors]
