The caves at Ellora, although lesser known then their near-by cousins, Ajanta, are amazing, not only for the carvings themselves but also as set of monasteries inhabited by Jain, Buddist and Hindu faiths at the same time. The caves are carved into a volcanic hillside with amazing precision and care. A three story dormitory, one of several dormitories, comes with carved cots, complete with pillows and running water in the form of a waterfall cascading from overhead. Located 22 km from Aurangabad, there are 34 caves/temples carved side by side between 600 and 1000 AD. The most famous is the Kailasa Temple, a bohemoth set of structures, twice the size of the Partenon, carved out of a single piece of rock and designed to look like the home of Lord Shiva. It is said to have taken 100 years to carve. Several Buddist Caves with huge carved stupas fill in the south, while marvelous Jain caves sit on the north end, with carefully detailed pillars and ceilings. [edit text][editors]
