Trissur (also called Trichur) district with Trissur City as its capital is an important part of the state of Kerala. It is also known as the “Cultural Capital” of Kerala due to its rich cultural heritage and archaeological wealth. Its colourful festivals like ‘Ekadasi at Guruvayur’, and ‘Bharani at Kodungallor’ are well known and display the rich cultural traditions of the region. The district is also blessed with splendid scenic beauty. The waterfalls at Athirapally and Vazhachal are the amoung the best seen in Kerala. 75% of the total geographical area here is under cultivation. For foreign tourists Trissur is always connected with the annual Pooram Festival, where the famous‘Elephant Umbrella’ competition is staged. Kodungallor, is a historical place and is said to have been the first settlement for the Jews, Christians and Muslims in India. St Thomas the Apostle is said to have landed at Muziris port near here in 52 AD. The town also has one of the earliest mosques in India. [edit text][editors]
