Travel guide to Yamnotri

getting cold after dark

well: Yamunotri, is actually not even a real village, nesteled between highrising walls.
It has no road access and can be reached after a 3 hours walk from Hanuman Chatti.
It is the first place of hindu pilgrimage of the four holy Ganges headrivers. The Yamuna river arises a glacier high up in the mountains. the altitude is approx 3500m.
From the early days of June, people start visiting, mostly on organized Yatra busses from their hometowns all over india. Usually people do not pause for long here, after their puja they returning back downhill.
Beside the Temple you will find a hand full simple guesthouses, caterer and packed shops for souveniers and devotional objects.

A hike the the second stange, to Gangotri starts from here via Yamutori Pass at 5172m and Dhumdhar Pass at approx 5600m. Selfexperienced: even when temperatures rise well over 45 degr celsius in Rishikesh it can heavily snow in this ranges. the trail is not used from shepperds or pilgrims at this time in the year.
