Food has always become one of the attraction when me and my husband visit a new place. Traditional culinary might be one of the consideration points that a place would be worth visited.

Manado Tua and Bunaken Islands

Manado is a nice place where you could get a view of the sea and the mountain at once since both attractions are easily to reach.
You can dive or snorkle at Bunaken as for its rich and beautiful coral reefs and after that you can also enjoy Tomohon, a mountainous city near Manado (Lokon and Mahawu mountains are the background of the city) with a wonderful three colors lake (Danau Linow).
It is also worth to visit Danau Tondano, an hour drive from Manado through Tomohon.
As a new attraction, Bukit Kasih (Love Hill) is also nice to be visited. It has a sclupture of Toar and Lumimuut (the original of Minahasans - the origin that populated Manado) and five religious places that show the various of religions adopted by the Indonesian people.
There is saying that if you visit Manado than you have to fulfill 5B's which are Bunaken, Boulevard (main road at Manado that has many stahls especially at night), Bukit Kasih, Bubur Manado (Minahasan corn porridge, called Tinutuan Porridge) and Bibir (lips, Minahasans' female are famous for their Angelina Jolie's type of lips - very sexy indeed!).
If you haven't got a chance to have it all five, then you are considered never been to Manado ! ;)

Places at Manado that worth to visit as part of culinary adventour:
(1) Nasi Kuning (yellow rice) at Teling, Restaurant Seroja, serve the best nasi kuning in Manado. You may dine in or have it for take away (they will provide a small traditional pouch for nasi kuning made from a dry leaves);
(2) Bubur Tinutuan (Tinutuan Porridge), try cafes along Wakeke street, usually serves as breakfast;
(3) Ice Tji Mei, a name of a restaurant that serve a stir of ice, red peanuts and durian. They also serve Gohu, a spicy soup consist of a small slices of raw papaya;
(4) Sea Food Restaurants along Malalayang Road - ask for Kenari Crab in rica-rica souce (traditional spicy souce as trademark for Minahasan's food);
(5) Klappertart (tart made from coconut) and Balapis, traditional pastries at Cella Cakeshop;
(6) Fried banana and fried tofu with spicy souce at stahls along Boulevard.

All the foods as stated above are the specialties of Minahasans and they don't cost as much and as tasty in Manado as you have it in a capital city like Jakarta or at the place where I live, Balikpapan.
Even though there are religions adopted by Minahasans that prohibit their followers to eat certain things, that does not stop the rest of other Minahasans to eat all the (so they called) eatible creatures such as monkey, snake and dog (they call it RW - erwei).
So you have to be very careful in choosing menus or restaurants around Manado and its surrounding areas. A Visit to Manado will not only enjoyable for your eyes, but (if you are carefull enough) also your tummy!

A visit to a famous for its controversy - Buyat Bay - also can be taken during a trip to Manado.
It will take almost 4 hours driving (one way) to Buyat Bay and the beach is pretty similar to the one near to Manado (I think the last even pretier). It is also rather difficult to have public transport to Buyat. Try to rent a car at Manado with or without driver to ease the public transport difficulties.

We were staying at Ritzy Hotel, the only 4 stars hotel in Manado. Since it is a 4 stars hotel then you can get the best view of all Manado, the Manado Tua and Bunaken Islands. The hotel pool also splendid for relaxation.
There are numerous other hotels in Manado, one of it is New Queen Hotel which is not too far from Bulevar, the main road of Manado (15 minutes of walking) and not as expensive as Ritzy.

If you are feeling edgy wondering around Manado without guides, than you can have a taxi driver to be a guide for you in a bargain price, as long as you know exactly which places that you would like to go.
Try Blue Banter Travel at Manado for further detail, the price is a little bit expensive though, but sure can satisfy a short trip to Manado.
