Shiraz is a busy town in the southern part of Iran. It is here, where the great variety of shiraz grape was grown to produce lovely spicy wine, which can taste like chocolate. The city has a number of sights, including an impressive Arg-e Karim Khani, a castle - the seat of the government of the Zand dynasty, which now houses a superb museum and a park within its walls - both frequented by the locals.
Shiraz's mosques and Islamic schools have been decorated rather unusually. Very rare red colour was used to decorate the tiles.
The city has a number of great parks, like the Eram Garden (with its famous pavilion) and the Melli Park, which houses the tomb of Iran's most beloved poet - Hafez, which has become a favourite place for the young at heart, and almost a pilgrimage site.
Shiraz is a gateway town for the archaeological sites of Persepolis and Naqsh-e Rostam. [edit text][editors]
