Naqsh-e Rostam is one of Iran's most spectacular sights. It's located about 60km from Shiraz. The site boasts 4 royal tombs carved inside a rock cliff, one of which is the tomb of one of Persia's greatest emperor - Darius the Great. The tombs were carved in the shape of regular crosses high in the cliff, which make an unforgettable and fabulously spectacular sight. It looks great from the distance and overwhelming from up close. Reliefs carved above and below the tombs represent the moments of glory in battles and parades, and are in a perfect state of preservation. Best time to visit is the morning for the correct sunlight.
The site is located few kilometres from the Shiraz - Isfahan expressway. There is no public transport, but a taxi can be hired from Shiraz. Since Persepolis is located at the other side of the expressway, the trip can combine a few sights in the area. The taxi drivers are used to those escapades and know the area very well. Half a day trip would cost c. €15. [edit text][editors]
