Travel guide to Yazd

Yazd, Dowlatabad Garden, Wind tower

Yazd is a city in the middle of Iran, located on the verge of the desert. Its Jameh Mosque has the tallest portal of all mosques in the country. The delightful and mysterious old town built from mud brick is quieter than most of the Iranian cities. Yazd is also known for its wind towers, an ancient system of air conditioning. The Amir Chakhmaq Complex, a spectacular three level facade with sunken alcoves, is a strange structure, which only provides a gateway to a minute market behind it. The facade is Yazd's calling card - an unmistakable sight of the city.

Yazd boasts fabulous traditional hotels, converted from typical households in the old town. Their service is immaculate, the restaurants superb, and the views from the roofs... unforgettable. Perfect places for chilling.

The outskirts of the city hide other quality slights, such as the Towers of Silence, remains of Zoroastrian tradition of funeral. Below the towers there are interesting ruins of Zoroastrian villages. [edit text] [editors]
