Actually there are two places here, Selinunte being the name of a substantial site of Greek remains and Marinella being the name of the tiny settlement that provides accommodation. Clearly it's Selinunte that draws the visitors.
The site is a large one, large enough anyway to merit two separate car entrances. There are three areas: the eastern temples, the acropolis and the necropolis, some distance away and, to most, less interesting.
In the first area one temple has been largely restored, apparently not without controversy, although it's very tastefully done. Then there are a number of temple ruins.
The acropolis was the area easiest to defend, although the city was conquered completely during the greek Peleponesian War. there are more temple remains here as well as those of houses and business premises.
In winter there are few visitors, although by february there's an abundance of wild flowers. [edit text][editors]
