Norman castles at Erice
Erice is a very picturesque village near the west coast of Sicily, sited high above the coastal city of Trapani (stress on first syllable of both places.) It even manages to be virtually free of the blocks of flats that spoil the views of many Sicilian villages.

It has two Norman castles and the street pattern is barely changed from those times. Both the views within the village and those down towards Trapani and its salt pans and to the open sea are stupendous.

The only downside is a proneness to mist, that means you cannot guarantee views from a short visit and the constant rise and fall of slopes and steps. For anybody who can manage that it is really a gem. [edit text]  [editors]
