Guidebooks tend to underplay this vital and interesting city on the whole.
It's a good place to stay, both for itself and as an easy centre for seeing some fine villas and gardens with short bus rides. However the notion that it is the best or even a good centre for visiting the Etrurian sights in Lazio must surely have een invented by someone who hasn't done it!
The Piazza del Plebiscito holds the municipal hall in a Renaisance palace and a most impressive clock tower. The Piazza San Lorenzo has the cathedral and the Palazzo dei Papi with a deservedly well known loggia.
However the truly stunning part of the city is the Pelegrino [pilgrim] area. The Palazzo San Pelegrino is said to contain one of the best groupings of medieval buildings of any city in Italy. [edit text][editors]
