Taormina, a hilltop town to the northeast of Sicily, doesn’t have room for many sights but it has one and a spectacular outlook, which includes wonderful coast and the volcano of Mount Etna. You would be well advised to book ahead for accommodation, especially in summer.
The one superb site is that of the so-called Greek Theatre, which displays almost completely Roman attributes. This is about as good as you can imagine for an outdoor theatre with Etna in view along with other impressive heights from many seats. You can easily get onto the stage and the odd group of ordinary visitors would bob up to render a song or some other theatrical stunt.
There is a funicular from the town down to the sea and the station below. The bus station is in the town itself and buses go direct to Catania airport. On the long crescent, which passes this, is a restaurant [turn right going out of the bus station] called la Bouganville, which is excellent and very moderately priced. [edit text]  [editors]
