Travel guide to Padova

Prato della Valle -

Padova, also called "Padua" is a small city about 40km west of Venice and is worth stopping at when in the area for its old city architecture or even as a good cheaper alternative to venetian accommodation. Galileo Galilei studied here at Italy's second oldest (1222) university. Main attraction is the pilgrimage site, the Basilica of St. Antonio (St. Anthony). The saint is buried here and his teeth are displayed in gold and glass within a side chapel of the complex together with thousands of other historic treasures. Year round the basilica is full of enthusiastic and happy pilgrims, mass every hour from 6am till 8pm! The nearby Basilica of St Guistina is just as big and impressive. Botanical Gardens (closed mondays) and the Prato della Valle are beautiful green areas. [edit text] [editors]
