Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and is nearly 1000 years old. It has influences from the Balkan, the Osmanli empire, the German empire, Italy and Austria (-Hungary) to which it once belonged.
Favourite spots:
The inner city is separated in two parts - the northern 'Gornij grad' and the southern 'Donji grad'. In Donji Grad I like the huge underground shopping center - paradise for every girl with its hundreds little stores! It's called 'Importanne' and is directly at the train station. The biggest and most central place in Zagreb is the Jelacic - place with a big statue of a horseman called Jelacic. Very impressing! From there you can go for a walk up to Gornij grad. There are some beautiful churches and many cafes to be visited - just enjoy the atmosphere! (And when you like markets, don't miss a visit to the 'Dolac'.)
What's really great:
Zagreb offers culture, atmosphere and entertainment as well, so there is much to discover. Something funny: There is a tower ('Lotrscak') that fires a canonball every day at 12 o' clock. First time I got a little shock!
There are many. And they're all very cosy, so you just can't do wrong.
Restaurants:
The cevapcici's are best not in expensive restaurants but in the little grills at any corner. And I highly recommend the numerous confectionery-cafes where you can enjoy your coffee with a yummy cream-cake.
Other recommendations:
If you like ice skating, you could visit the outdoor ice skating installation. But it's often very crowded.
