Very English feel to it. Punting on the River Avon - close your eyes and you could be in Oxford. Not a lot going on here, more of a commercial centre, so pick up a car and head out of the city to explore. We stayed with some friends who have a vineyard up in the Waipara Valley (about 30 mins drive North of Christchurch). Many wineries to visit - great Pinot Noirs and Reislings if you're into your wine. Also great rugged deserted beaches - dig around in the driftwood and pebbles and you might even find a Paua shell. South of Christchurch the Banks Peninsula is also worth a look - Akaroa is quaint with some good little craft/souvenir shops. We bought Akaroa cod and cooked it up on the BBQ, it was delicious.

Waipara wine region and the French influenced Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula. The whole of the Banks Peninsula is the interior of a volcano - hence the land is extremely fertile, lots of flowers (check out the protea farm), fruit, wineyards etc. Hanmner Springs north of Christchurch was very disappointing - man made spring. Don't bother

The stunning hills and turquoise coloured water. Lyttelton Harbour was beautiful with little coloured cottages, and some great quirky little bars and restaurants.

Crowne Plaza - we were flashpacking the day we spent there. Go for club room and get free drinks and canapes before dinner and free internet access.

Head down to The Strip for great al fresco restaurants.
