Kuala Lumpur travelogue picture
Went to see the Thaipusam Festival in Kuala Lumpur. Amazing Hindu festival where devotees carry kadavis up to the Batu Caves outside KL. Some with piercings or hooks into their skin. Huge ornate kadavis are carried with the weight on their shoulders while the devotee spins around in a trance.Takes place in Jan or Feb every year. Also can be seen in Penang, Singapore and a few other cities around Malaysia. Falls according to the Hindu calendar...Penang is also a nice place to see with a lot of Chinese influence. The snake temple there doesn't have many snakes left though...Spent 5 days on Langkawi island. Good place to relax although prices seem higher for food and accom than elsewhere in Malaysia. Beaches are better in S Thailand...Melaka is a good historical city to spend 2 days in. It is south of KL only about a 2 hour drive. Good Chinese food in Melaka.

Favourite spots:

Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur. Great food can be found for cheap prices. Excellent hawkers set up in the evening for lots of choices. Roti Canai, satay, noodles, steamboat style dining, fruits, and much more. Batu Caved during Thaipusam. Thousands of people everywhere all making their way up the 272 steps in the caves.

What's really great:

Thaipusam was incredible to see...Like the ease of getting from place to place with no worries. Travel is cheap by bus and you can get anywhere that way...The people are very friendly and helpfull...Food is everywhere and very affordable. Nice to try new tastes.

Sights:

Batu Caves and the many temples and mosques around the city.
