Stop in Surin

  6 votes

Coming in on the bus I was told that Surin was known for elephants. There is an elephant festival every year. I stayed in the middle of the city about a block from the night market. I liked this city. The people were all very friendly. Found internet around Surin Sq. To me this seemed like a real Thai city. The options for food at the night market were amazing. There is another market down the street from the night one which seems most active during daytime. Starting in the early evening you can see a few elephants being ridden around the city. There are a few nice temples around the city. You could also visit some Khmer Ruins as a day trip out of town.

Favourite spots:
Definitely the night market. I looked forward to it daily.

What's really great:
I loved the fact that I felt I was in the real thailand. I only ran into 2 other travelers while I was there.

Sights:
Elephants walking around in the evenings. Prasat Sikhoraphum khmer ruins NE of Surin. Prasat Hin San Pluang khmer sanctuary S of Surin. Prasat Phumipone ruin from 7 century.

Accommodations:
Niddiew Sangthong Hotel-hw, tv, ac, 320B. Good location near night market, bus station and Surin Sq

Restaurants:
SukiYaki restaurant on Surin Sq.
Night Market great eats for cheap.
