Visiting the Monuments

  13 votes

Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand until 1767. It was destroyed by the Burmese in multiple attacks, and finally the capital was moved to Thonburi by General Phya Tak Sin. The entire city is made up of temples and buildings that are ancient (and unfortunately partially destroyed).

Favourite spots:
The entire city feels like an enormous park, and so as you visit the ruins you can just relax on the grounds and have a pleasant day.

What's really great:
Touring the monuments was a fantastic was to see the city and how the people built it up.

Sights:
The ruins (obviously) are the largest draw to this city. They are absolutely beautiful, and it's easy to rent a bike to get to all of them. The ones across the river are some of the most beautiful, so be sure to get over there. And keep your ticket stubs, as sometimes the stub from one is good for two or three (it all depends, but it's not expensive to see everything).

Restaurants:
There are restaurants around the city, but the place I preferred to go to the night market near the water and get food. It's a much wider variety than any single restaurant, and you can pick and choose small portions as you move through the market.

Other recommendations:
The night market is great (aside from the food) for seeing some of the other things that people come out to sell. They have anything you could want - including a lot of clothes.
