Beautiful, super charming. This town has it all except for a city feeling. The centre is compact and very walkable, and the surroundings are sea and mountains.
Favourite spots:
Kjøttbasaren (the meat bazaar): Large hall close to the harbour, selling all kinds of fresh, slightly luxurious food. Fisketorget (fish market): On the harbout, mainly fresh seafood, food stalls with easy miniature meals and some souvenirs here and there. Fløien: Mountain top, excellent view, funicular brings you up, back down it's nice to walk.
What's really great:
Pretty much goes as above. Strolling the narrow, carless shopping streets is nice, having an icecream at the harbour...
Accommodations:
Usually stay with friends. There is accommodation in all ranges. Spent a night at a dreadful hostel in Oscarsgate once, was very cheap. The tourist info (right across the street from fish market, big red brick building) has listings of all accommodation.
Hangouts:
Anywhere but the Football Pub...
Restaurants:
Pastacentralen is great - excellent pasta at a very cheap price, popular with students - one can ask for half plates for half the price and it's absolutely enough for a meal (I never figured out how they get space enough on the plates if they are to put twice as much on)
