Ancient ferraris and other things Roman

  11 votes

It's big and bustling, yet it's just a small sideway into an alley and you're suddenly somewhere different - a quiet yard or a charmy restaurant. And wherever you go, you're certain to stumble across some huge, impressive, really old building.

Favourite spots:
Pantheon area at night, although touristy. The sistine chapel. Forum Romanum.

What's really great:
The walkability. We walked and walked and walked for a week, never using a cab and seeing a lot. Kept stumbling across see-worthies.

Sights:
-St. Peter's Basilica (is that it in English?), including one piece of crooked pope and excellent Michelangelo sculptures.
-Fontana di Trevi: Nice fountain, excellent tourist markets nearby and the icecream is great.
-Vatican Museum including sistine chapel: Was brought around by the most energetic guide I've yet to meet, so feet hurt and head was very full afterwards, but it's great. Will have more time next time though.
-Spanish stairs and French church on top: absolutely atmospheric, no great views in themselves.
-Forum Romanum: Interesting, free guiding offered by tourism students. Great to get away from city buzz for a while. Close to the
-Colosseum: Big. Lots of stones.
-Pantheon: Also big. Great at night.
-Piazza Navona: Nice, but too touristy.

Accommodations:
Went charter, so wouldn't really know. Spent a few nights in some extremely cheap student home for women with hilarious house rules - don't know where, reasonably close to Termini.

Hangouts:
Everywhere.

Restaurants:
Funnily enough our best meal was Chinese... Guess we stuck too much to the touristy areas, as we didn't feel like venturing far for a meal. Greasy eats and lousy service was a standard.

Other recommendations:
Tiny markets all around town, don't invite for huge shopping sprees unless you need shoelaces and cucumbers, but they're atmospheric.
