Very, very nice! (5*)

rangutan - Apr, 22 2008 06:04pm
Nice = *** not *****! Way out of focus but interesting [2.8]

krisek - Apr, 22 2008 06:04pm
:) it's not way out of focus. This illusion is created by the mist, or I should say sliding cloud

rangutan - Apr, 22 2008 06:04pm
OK, but 5* is usually what we print posters from and put on the main-page of websites and glossy magazines.

basia - Apr, 22 2008 07:04pm
Rudi, I like the photograph. It looks like it's been taken in hard weather and lighting conditions. And it is a matter of taste, as well. You are welcome to have a different opinion of course, but do I really need to be patronised? I do not appreciate that.

rangutan - Apr, 22 2008 07:04pm
I like this photograph too but compare it to all the others! We rate between 1-5, not everything 5*. Look at the other top images, is this really amoungst your favorites?

mortimer - Apr, 23 2008 08:04am
Rudi
There are so many users of Globo that just rate everything 4 or 5 and when a true gem comes up they would like to give six, seven, eight or more Stars...
I gave up arguing and stopped rating a lot of pictures as so many people just give "arselicking" rates.

This picutre here is ok but that's it, I would possibly not even stick it in my private Album if I shot it, as it doesn't fulfil my expectations of a showworthy picutre. Therefore I agree with you that, in my personal opinion, I would not give a higher rate as 3*.

and again, some members should be reminded that Globosapiens is a Travel website for members to showcase things that are out in the world. It is NOT a photography site to show how good you are at taking pics it's a travel site to show where you have been!!

Good pic Krisek, check out mine of La Citedal in Haiti http://www.globosapiens.net/ta-shy/picture-ariel-view-of-la-citedal-6584.html

Once more I say "show the full listing of who gave what points"

In this case the matter is fully transparent and the rating quickly reaches the consensus three stars.
It is the sneaky no comment three star merchants we need to flush out. They add nothing to the travel or photographic standards of the sight as the contributor is left wondering what wasa the parameter that attracted the particularly low rating.

I agree 100% with Horourke. There are several members harsh on everyone except the specific circle of allies. I for the life of me cannot understand how some mof mine are judged so harshly!

murrayskinner - Apr, 23 2008 10:04am
It nlooks beautiful with the mist wafting upo the mountain!

Hmm... this is an interesting debate, and not that unpredictable, to be honest. I have not put this picture here hoping it would be the next POM! I just wanted to share it with you all to show you how inhospitable Madeira can be when it rains. I just hope that you realise how difficult it was to take this one - I had to take a few shots, as most of them were coming out completetly white!! If I were to chirp in to the discussion I'd say that perhaps we could scrap giving stars but keep providing comments. Rating will always be vary subjective and I seriously doubt that the majority of the members know enough about photography to competently rate photos, including myself! Peace.

ta-shy - Apr, 23 2008 12:04pm
agreed.. well said, I have been proposing this also.. I really don't care what people think of my photo, I just want to share what I've seen.
I'm not a photographer, nor do I want to be one.

zrusseff - Apr, 23 2008 02:04pm
Krisek, totally fantastic shot since your photograph affords me the ability to visit a place that I didn't even know existed and I did visit Portugal in 2006 for a few day.
Also, I like that you did a series of shots of the village and then this aerial view. There is something sweet and nostalgic about this coastal village and may someday if I ever get back to Portugal, I will like to visit Funchal, Madeira.
I LEARNED ABOUT A NEW PLACE TODAY! GLOBO ROCKS! I love this website because I like that I can learn new things aside from the rating pissing contest!

davidx - Apr, 23 2008 02:04pm
I'm not one either but I admit I should love to be one. However that doesn't seem very relevant. I do agree with those who say that quality should not be the sole consideration in sending up a photo.
Many give invaluable information and a simple desire to share is sufficient motive anyway.
I welcome helpful comments on how a photo could be improved but these are terribly rare - even when somebody asks specifically as Amanda did recently.
I am not sure about removing stars as I think we do need a mechanism for placing them in some sort of order for visitors. I don't see anything wrong with rating them subjectively - surely what we need to know is how much pleasure a photo gives - though I never give 5* unless there is some sense of place.
I make no claim to be an expert assessor but I do give grades from 2* to 5* [I think a personal and confidential email is more appropriate when the judgement would indicate only one star.]
Lastly - why the insults? We don't need them here.

davidx - Apr, 23 2008 02:04pm
Having got that off my chest and at the risk of being accused of 'arse-licking' I thought I should rate the picture. I have given it 4* on the basis that I do think it is very good but it lacks that extra something that would give a 5*.

mortimer - Apr, 23 2008 03:04pm
I should appologise to everybody who feels hurt by my term "arselicking" I didn't mean to hurt anybody I just wanted to explain my thoughts about just using **** and ***** for EVERYTHING.

Why do People here have a Problem with saying: This is a GOOD Picture? Why is a *** Rating not good enough as a Rating? I just don't get this.

I like to give ***** for the very best pictures. The rest is **** or ***, some might be ** and some are plain *. So what.

krisek - Apr, 23 2008 05:04pm
Now, I have put some more rainy photos in the 'Madeira in the rain album' for you to enjoy, or not... At least you can see how exciting my day was ;)

mistybleu - Apr, 23 2008 08:04pm
It's great this picture has promoted so much discussion. To me rating pictures are subjective and I don't think there is a right or wrong rate - just opinions on what we like.

leillli - Apr, 24 2008 01:04am
Gosh!!!it seems ,every body here doesn't have much work to do which an ok pictute made this lonnnnnng debate!!giving rate is something which is up to u not anybody else!!!!
