I went to see the mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo in November 2005. It was one of the most thrilling and overwhelming experiences in my life. The fact the animals had no fear and felt so comfortable around the human visitors was mid boggling. The silverback, who should be protecting the family (also as the mother was pregnant), as soon as I arrived with the rangers, he decided to take a nap! The baby gorillas were mischievous like any three or four year olds, paying with the older brothers and jumping on me, playing with my camera bag. Then, the father got up and took the family out for lunch. I could not believe that the 60 minutes permitted to be around those magnificent apes, was over. Two years later the family was murdered.
