I went to Somaliland to see the prehistoric rock art. There were a number of places around the capital city of Hargeisa, where these cave paintings could be visited, but the most remarkable were those in Las Geel and Dhagax Guure. I had to obtain a permit from the Ministry of Culture & Tourism (USD 30 per site), but I ended up meeting and shaking hands with the Minister himself. It was tricky to take decent photographs, but since they were well preserved and the colours were vivid, it was easier than I thought it might be. There were about six different caves in Las Geel and at least four in Dhagax Guure. Las Geel was well organised and documented in the nearby museum. THe other site was wild, very difficult to find, there were no guides and I had to ask local farmers to show me the caves. There might have been many more than I had actually seen. Enjoy the pictures!
