Effectively, an independent island still tied to the political union with Tanganika (Tan-Zan-ia?), is one of the best traveller's destinations. It has great architecture, atmospheric if a little odoriferous alleys, perfect beaches, fantastic nightlife and really, really friendly people. Plus, there are a few little islands around, which offer tidal deserted beaches full with starfish and... giant tortoises.
