Perhaps the most famous Berber town anywhere in Northern Sahara, Ghadames, is also called the Jewel of the Sahara. There is absolutely no exaggeration here. The roofed streets and passage ways of this amazing town create inexplicable atmosphere and climate. It is hard to find the right words to begin to describe the place. It cannot really be compared to any other place. It truly feels like you landed somehow in XIII century in the middle of a desert. The alleys get really dark and the ancient lighting does not work so the experience is authentic. There is also a new town of Ghadames, where the entire population now lives, as the old town is virtually a museum. However, the locals moved out to the new district for better comfort and hygiene. The old town is closed at night. Ghadames is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. [edit text][editors]
